If you’re thinking of filing for divorce or filing a custody case, it’s important to know who your judge is going to be. At the end of the day, the judge has the final say over decisions that will affect your life in major ways for years to come. Once your case is filed & your judge is assigned, you will want to learn as much as you can about who they are & what their reputation is like.

Something most people don’t know is that within the first 30 days of the case being filed, you are entitled to one motion for change of judge. There doesn’t have to be any reason or cause for the request as long as it’s made within those first 30 days. An important task you will have is to speak with family, friends & most importantly, your attorney, about the judge. Most judges who have been on the bench for any significant amount of time build up a reputation. If it seems that your judge will be a good fit for your case, that’s great; however, if you feel the judge will be unlikely to see your side or perspective, you will want your attorney to file a motion for change of judge.
